My Journey from Classical Training to Rock, Film Scoring, and Beyond

Music has been a lifelong companion for Gregori Palumbo, evolving alongside him as he explored different genres, instruments, and creative avenues. What started as a rigorous classical education at Juilliard eventually led him down unexpected paths—from scoring films and TV shows to writing rock songs and fronting a classic rock band. His musical journey has never fit neatly into one box, and that’s exactly what makes it unique.

A Classical Beginning

Gregori’s musical talent was recognized early on—almost by accident. His mother had just begun taking piano lessons, and after her second lesson, while she and her teacher had coffee, Gregori sat down at the piano and played the pieces she was learning perfectly. His parents immediately arranged for him to take lessons, determined to nurture his gift. They sought out the very best teachers, consulting with his father’s good friend, composer and head of Capitol Records, George Greeley, who also recognized that Gregori had an exceptional talent.

Under Greeley’s guidance, Gregori trained with Leah Effenbach from Juilliard, competed in piano competitions, often winning against much older children, and even wrote his first piano sonata at just five years old. These experiences ultimately led him to The Juilliard School, where he immersed himself in the world of classical performance and composition. He developed a deep appreciation for the technical precision and expressive depth of classical music, but even then, he was always experimenting.

While other students were focused solely on perfecting pieces from Bach and Chopin, Gregori found himself improvising in different styles—sometimes even “faking” his way through practice by making up his own versions of classical works. His parents, who couldn’t read music, believed he was practicing the assigned pieces, but in reality, he was creating something entirely new. This early inclination toward improvisation and composition would later shape his work as a film composer and songwriter.

Expanding Into Film and TV Scoring

Gregori’s first major departure from the classical world came when he started working in film and television scoring. Music in film isn’t just about melody—it’s about creating an emotional landscape, enhancing storytelling, and often disappearing into the background while still leaving a profound impact.

One of his early scoring projects was for MindBodySeries, a collection of wellness programs that incorporated music designed to promote relaxation, focus, and well-being. Through this work, he began experimenting with binaural beats, harmonic overtones, and ambient textures, blending scientific principles with musical artistry to create soundscapes that could actually influence mood and cognition.

Over the years, Gregori expanded his scoring work to include independent films, television projects, and commercial compositions, using everything he had learned from classical training while embracing the freedom of contemporary production techniques.

Stepping Into Rock and Songwriting

Despite his deep roots in classical music and film scoring, Gregori has always had a passion for rock and songwriting. Performing live brings a completely different energy compared to composing for film—it’s raw, immediate, and deeply personal.

As Gregory (or Gregori) Cash, he began writing and performing original songs that fused his classical background with modern rock influences. These songs allowed him to step into the role of storyteller, lyricist, and frontman, crafting music that was meant to be felt as much as heard.

Los Padres: From School Fundraisers to the Stage

Gregori’s love for live music eventually led him to Los Padres, a classic rock band with an unusual origin. What started as a group of dads playing music at their kids’ schools quickly grew into something bigger. Their performances gained traction, and before long, they were playing corporate gigs, weddings, and live events. The transition from casual jam sessions to professional performances was seamless, reinforcing Gregori’s belief that music—no matter the genre—has the power to bring people together.

Finding His Own Musical Identity

Looking back, Gregori’s path has been anything but linear. From Juilliard to film scoring, from ambient relaxation music to rock and songwriting, his career has been defined by constant reinvention. He has never wanted to be confined to one genre or musical identity—he thrives on the challenge of exploring new sounds, blending influences, and creating something unique every time he sits at the piano or steps onto a stage.

As his journey continues, Gregori remains open to wherever the music takes him next. Whether composing an orchestral film score, writing a song, or playing classic rock with Los Padres, one thing remains certain—music will always be at the heart of everything he does.
